It is a known fact that professional associations are needed to promote knowledge. I was told there existed an orthopaedic association in the Twin cities which was meeting once in a blue moon. The need was felt for a regular meet and when I became independent in October 1985 in Nizam''s Institute of Orthopaedics and Specialities (NIOS), I called for a meeting of all the like minded people and all stake holders to discuss the formation of Twin City Orthopaedic Society (TCOS). A constitution was prepared and read out to the General body by Senior Orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. G. Vijaya Raghavan. All the suggestions of the General body were taken and incorporated in the constitution.
The then senior most orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. M. Ranga Reddy was elected as chairman of the society. I (Dr. A. Srinivas Rao) was elected as the Secretary Treasurer for three years whereas chairman's post was for one year. It was decided to have the meet on the morning of first sunday of the month by turns in Osmania General Hospital, Gandhi Hospital and Nizam's Institute of Orthopaedics and Specialities. To have cohesion between teaching and non-teaching Orthopaedic surgeons, it was decided to rotate Chairman's post between the two categories every alternate year. Thus, Prof. P. Sundariah, Professor of Orthopaedics at Osmania medical College followed Dr. M. Ranga Reddy. The next year, Dr. Ved Prakash, a practicing Orthopaedic surgeon became chairman and he was followed by Prof. P. Subba Rao, Professor of Orthopaedics at Gandhi Medical College. Thus the chain followed.
It was decided to have a talk by a specialist related to orthopaedic surgery to be followed by case discussions. The same pattern continues in monthly TCOS meetings till now.
